How to Start Colouring your Hair, When You’ve Never Coloured Before

People who have never Coloured their Hair before have always been a mystery to me. I’ve always marveled at how Hair Colour can transform a person and I’ve always been intrigued as to why it doesn’t marvel them also. I don’t care the reasoning, I’m into it because it encompasses everything I love about Hair Colour. And as with any Colour adventure, we always have a plan to know what lies ahead. Pre Colouring Advice

Stay away from Bleach.
Keep in mind, Semi or Gloss Colours will not Lighten or cover Greys.
Believe you can do it.
Only use high-quality Colour products.
Know what you are doing, before you begin Colouring.

Step 1: Choose the Hair Colour you want to be.

Browsing through the Hair Colour swatches, find the My Hairdresser Shade that inspires you most.

Or choose a Hair Colour Shade that will suit your Skin tone. Cool Skin Tones suit Cool Hair Colours like Ash, Beige, Silver or Violet. Warm Skin Tones suit Warm Hair Colours like Gold, Chocolate or Copper. To find out whether a Hair Colour is Cool or Warm, click on the Hair Swatch to find out.

Tip 1: Choose a Hair Colour Shade within 2 Shades of your Natural Hair Colour.
Tip 2: If you are between a few Colour choices, always choose the Lighter Shade as it is always easier to go Darker.

Step 2: Identify your Natural Hair Colour.

Although all your Hair is technically your Natural Hair Colour, we like to keep in the habit of looking at your Regrowth area closest to your scalp to find your true Natural Hair Colour to determine the Developer you will need.Using the Natural Hair Colour Chart, find the Colour number that is closest to your Regrowth.

Step 3: Find your Developer.

Your Developer will determine your Colour outcome, so it is essential to get your Developer choice right.

To Lighten: If the Hair Colour Shade you have chosen is Lighter than your Natural Hair Colour, you will need to choose a 20, 30 or 40 Volume Developer with Lightening powers.

To Darken: If the Hair Colour Shade you have chosen is Darker than your Natural Hair Colour, a No Lift Developer will do the job.

To cover Greys: If you have more than 50% Grey Hair, use a 20 Volume Developer.

For example:

The Hair Colour you want to be: 7.3 Golden Blonde
(minus)
Your Natural Hair Colour: 5 Dark Brown
(equals)
2 Shades.
You will need a 20 Volume Developer to Lighten your Hair 2 Shades.

The Hair Colour you want to be: 6.5 Pure Plum
(minus)
Your Natural Hair Colour: 3 Medium Brown
(equals)
3 Shades. You will need a 30 Volume Developer to Lighten your Hair 3 Shades.

The Hair Colour you want to be: 9.3 Light Golden Blonde
(minus)
Your Natural Hair Colour: 5 Dark Brown
(equals)
4 Shades. You will need a 40 Volume Developer to Lighten your Hair 4 Shades.

Step 4: Do a Skin Allergy Test.

You’re new to this so take no chances, do a Skin Allergy Test 48 hours before Colouring by following these instructions.

Step 5: Apply to your Hair

Using an Applicator Bottle or Tint Bowl and Brush set — mix your Hair Colour and Developer, as per the Colours mixing instructions.

Apply your Colour mixture to your Regrowth first, then through the rest of your Hair. Process your Hair Colour as per instructions.
